A sweater heavily inspired by the famous Norwegian Sotra sweater, easily recognizable with a pattern of repeated eight-petal roses across it. The original Sotra sweater was part of our collection in the early 1990s. This contemporary version has a young fit with bold pattern and contrast color ribbing around neck, cuffs and hem.

The Alvøy sweater is made of 100% fine Norwegian wool from the sheep’s very first shearing. The short fibers of the wool make the yarn finer and softer, giving us a light, warm and comfortable sweater. For extra comfort, the neck is lined with soft merino wool.

The fibers are short, giving us a finer and softer yarn. The outcome is thin, light and soft garments, while maintaining the brilliance, crimp and longevity for which Norwegian wool is world renowned.

Norwegian wool is one of the world’s most animal-friendly textile fibers, due to the sheep’s natural mountain life. Our Norwegian wool comes from sheep known for roaming freely in the vast Norwegian hillsides while grazing in natural pastures.

To make it machine washable the Heron yarn undergoes a revolutionary new wool treatment using natural non-toxic salts. Machine wash using wool-cycle. (Fiber diameter: 30.5 micron)

The original Sotra sweater has its name from the Sotra island, the largest island in an archipelago west of Bergen. The topography on this island creates calm bays and dense forests on the east side of the island, while the west side is raw and naked, exposed to the harsh weather from the North Sea.

On this island a variation of the eight-petal rose pattern emerged: The roses are separated by diagonal lines on a contrasting background, giving us an intricate geometrical pattern. It is believed that the eight-petal rose came to the island around 1850, introduced by traders and sailors from the famous Hardanger region.

In those days fishing was the main income source of the Sotra island, and the Sotra sweater was most likely worn at celebrations and special occasions only.
