How to wash and dry your wool garments.

A key factor in taking proper care of your wool garment is to wash it correctly. And equally important: Since wool garments can be refreshed simply by hanging in fresh air, they require less washing than other garments. Fewer washing cycles provides for a longer lifespan for your garment.

Some of our garments need to be hand washed. Please remember to check the washing instructions on your garment prior to washing.

Machine wash

Wool requires lower washing temperatures than other garments. Wash with wool cycle at 30 degrees Celsius. It is important to use dedicated wool wash detergents. The enzymes and bleach in regular laundry detergents can harm the wool fiber. Closing all zippers will prevent the zipper teeth from damaging the delicate wool. Do not overfill the washing machine, this will cause friction and subsequently pilling of the wool. Our wool garments can be centrifuged. Do not tumble dry.

Hand wash

It’s important to do the hand wash of wool properly. The water should hold approximately 30 degrees Celsius. Do not twist or stretch the garment, instead squeeze it gently with your fingers. Then rinse the garment repeatedly in clean water to remove any remaining laundry detergent. Do not tumble dry.

Drying

For the wool garment to maintain its shape, it’s important that you flat dry the wool garment, preferably lying flat on top of a drying rack. Avoid hanging the wet garment on the clothesline or on a hanger. This can cause the garment to lose its shape. Stretch the garment carefully into its original shape.

Do not tumble dry our wool garments.

Pilling

Pilling is caused by the way yarn is made. In a yarn numerous wool fibers are spun together in a long thread. Washing and wearing a wool garment can cause loose fibers to push out from the surface and form into a small ball or pill. Friction is the main factor in causing pilling. Repeated friction from, for instance, seat belts or shoulder bags, can provoke pilling. Likewise, overfilling the washing machine can cause similar friction. By airing the garment rather than washing it, the risk of pilling is reduced. However, it can be a good idea to wash the wool garment before first-time use. This removes loose fibers on the surface, thus reducing the risk of pilling.

The degree of pilling is dependent on type of yarn and knitting technique. The looser the yarn is spun, and garment is knitted, the higher risk of pilling.

If your garment is pilling, it is important to know that it doesn’t reduce the quality of your garment. The pills can simply be removed with a pilling comb/wool comb. This can be purchased online and in specialized yarn and fabric stores.

Airing

It might sound odd, but it’s a fact: The best way to keep your wool garment beautiful and in good condition for years to come, is to wash it less frequently.

Wool has several unique properties, one of them being that wool garments can be refreshed simply by hanging in fresh air. Wool is naturally antibacterial and dirt resistant. These things combined means you don’t need to wash your wool garment as frequently as other garments. Not only does this prolong the lifespan of your garment. It allows you to reduce your personal consumption by saving energy and laundry detergent – and reducing the turnover of your wardrobe.

Preferably the wool garment should be aired outdoors. Alternatively, you can hang your garment in a high-humidity room, like the bathroom. A good tip is to hang your garment in the bathroom while taking a shower. Another is to let your wool garment rest by not using it subsequently, day after day.

Stains can be removed by water, either with a damp cloth or rinsing the stained part in the sink.
